The last couple of years has turned so many worlds upside down. For some of us, they’ve been the hardest years of our lives—each for different reasons.
But regardless of the circumstances, I’ve noticed a commonality when talking and writing with others. We can all relate to the theme of hardship. So, I wrote this as a bit of a “yeah, me too.” Sometimes, just knowing that you’re not alone is comforting in and of itself.
But the one person who is always there to comfort us, who never leaves us, and who never stops taking care of us is God. He is Jehovah-Jireh, meaning “the Lord will provide.”
We don’t need to doubt His provision because if He’s even taking care of the birds and the lilies there’s no reason why we need to be filled with fear or doubt that He’s going to provide for us, His very children. This is what He says;
““Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?
So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Matthew 6:25-34 NIV
I remind myself that it may have been a hard year, but I still have breath in my lungs. “The lilies have clothes, the river still flows, and the sun’s still shining.” It might have been a hard year, but God is still good.
Next time you’re filled with worry, I encourage you to look back and see the ways the Lord has provided for you in the past. Give thanks. Remind yourself why you’re still here and that He’s got you.
